Rumor: If Samsung buys more of MediaTek’s chips, the company will give it a discount

For its phones, Samsung has sourced chipsets from Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Samsung, which vary in percentage. A tipster claims that MediaTek is trying to woo Samsung with special pricing and talks to become a bigger part of the Galaxy series.

It wants to increase the use of MediaTek chips, especially in Samsung’s entry-level devices. Barring the Galaxy M53, the majority of Galaxys using MediaTek processors fall into the A3x or lower class.

Naturally, the lowest material costs are found in budget phones, so a price cut for the chipset—one of the most expensive parts—looks good. Additionally, in the event that Qualcomm tries to raise prices, this could be used as leverage.

There’s no indication of MediaTek joining the competition with flagship or competing mid-range chipsets.

Samsung won’t want to add a third supplier for its more expensive Galaxy lines because it recently reintroduced Exynos at the high end with the Galaxy S24 and S24+ and its “for Galaxy” designed chip with Qualcomm. There is a special agreement to buy seats.
